Cast iron cookware with tripod, or spider, legs were commonplace prior to the development of iron cook stoves in the 1840's. The legs on the spider skillet kept the pot stable in the cooking fireplace coals. Wrought steel spider skillets sold for 25 cents per two and a half pounds in the 1895 Montgomery Ward & Company catalogue. See, Russell and Erwin Catalogue, 1865, p. 393.
