Cotton scales were used to weigh the uncleaned bags of cotton fresh from the field. The cotton was then processed in a cotton gin to remove the seeds and bound into square bales for sale. Virtually no cotton was grown in eastern Texas until 1830, and the first cotton gin was not established until 1833.
