Captain Frederick (Fred) Voigt was born on September 4 , 1825 in Prussia . He emigrated to Nacogdoches , Texas sometime before 1849 . Voigt became a member of the Milam Lodge No . 2 in 1852 and in 1854 held the position of secretary of the lodge . From 1854 to 1861 Voigt was the U . S . Postmaster for Nacogdoches and once the Civil War started he became the Confederate postmaster . Voigt was promoted in 1863 from the position of Lieutenant to Captain of Company G and Adjutant 12th Regiment of the Confederate Army . Once the war ended , he became a state senator for the Nacogdoches district in 1866 . He was the editor for The Nacogdoches Chronicle from 1866-1868 . He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church and in 1870 he was the Sunday School Superintendent at the church . In 1874 , he became the State Librarian Superintendent of State Capitol grounds & state property in Austin . Voigt died in 1880 when he drowned in the Angelina River while traveling home to Nacogdoches .
