Virginia
.
Roberts
enlisted
to be a
part
of
Captain
James
Terrell's
Troop
of
Calvary
in the
War
of
1812
and had
several
enlistments
in a
three-year
time
period
before
being
discharged
in
May
1815
. In
1826
, he
moved
to
Texas
and
joined
the
Ayish
Bayou
forces
that
participated
in the
Fredonian
Rebellion
. By
1827
,
Roberts
entered
a
mercantile
business
with
John
Durst
and in
1832
began
land
speculating
.
Roberts
participated
in the
Texas
Revolution
as a
First
Lieutenant
under
Captaim
Thomas
J
.
Rusk
. He was
elected
as
one
of the
four
delegates
to
attend
the
Constitutional
Convention
of
1836
and he
signed
the
Texas
Declaration
of
Independence
on
March
2
,
1836
.
After
the
Texas
Revolution
Roberts
returned
to
Nacogdoches
and
continuing
business
as a
merchant
. He
later
moved
his
business
into the
Old
Stone
Fort
. In the
Old
Stone
Fort
he
opened
a
grocery
store
and
saloon
.
