John S. Roberts was born on July 13, 1796 in Virginia. Roberts enlisted to be a part of Captain James Terrell's Troop of Calvary in the War of 1812 and had several enlistments in a three-year time period before being discharged in May 1815. In 1826, he moved to Texas and joined the Ayish Bayou forces that participated in the Fredonian Rebellion. By 1827, Roberts entered a mercantile business with John Durst and in 1832 began land speculating. Roberts participated in the Texas Revolution as a First Lieutenant under Captaim Thomas J. Rusk. He was elected as one of the four delegates to attend the Constitutional Convention of 1836 and he signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. After the Texas Revolution Roberts returned to Nacogdoches and continuing business as a merchant. He later moved his business into the Old Stone Fort. In the Old Stone Fort he opened a grocery store and saloon. |

John S. Roberts and his wife, Harriet Fenley Callier Roberts, had one child named Lycurgus. Roberts adopted a son from Harriet Fenley Callier Robert's first marriage. His adopted step-son's name was John Fenley Carter, which changed to John Fenley Roberts when he was adopted. |
