Title
Louisiana
Pine
Snake
Location
Angelina
National
Forest
,
Texas
Description
The
Louisiana
Pine
Snake
is
possibly
the
rarest
snake
in the
United
States
,
living
in
restricted
patches
of
dry
pine
forests
with
sandy
soil
. The
abundance
of this
snake
in the
aforementioned
habitat
seems
to
depend
upon
the
presence
of
pocket
gophers
,
despite
their
complete
willingness
in
laboratories
to
accept
captive-bred
mice
. In the
wild
, the
Louisiana
Pine
Snake
prefers
to
live
in
rodent
burrows
and
tunnels
,
where
it
also
hibernates
during
the
colder
months
of the
year
. These
snakes
have a
very
small
clutch
size
relative
to
other
snakes
,
laying
up
to
three
to
five
very
large
eggs
, from
which
large
neonates
hatch
after
about
sixty
days
. The
Louisiana
Pine
Snake
does
not
receive
federal
protection
under
the
Endangered
Species
Act
but
is
listed
as '
threatened
' in
Texas
and '
imperiled
to
vulnerable
' in
Louisiana
.
