Description
The
Three-Toed
Box
Turtle
gets
its
name
from the
number
of
toes
it
has on
each
hind
foot
.
However
,
it
is
generally
accepted
that
some
individuals
may
have
four
toes
on
each
hind
foot
.
Box
turtles
have
varying
diets
and
can
be
considered
omnivorous
. They have been
known
to
eat
small
bird
eggs
,
insects
,
small
fruit
, and
green
leafy
vegetation
. A
hinged
plastron
allows
these
turtles
to
completely
box
themselves
into their
shells
,
preventing
predators
from
access
to any
fleshy
parts
that they
might
try
to
nip
at.
