Title
Atlantic
Green
Sea
Turtle
-
Effects
of
Pollution
Location
South
Padre
Island
,
Texas
Description
This
is
an
excellent
example
of how
even
the
smallest
piece
of
litter
can
cause
major
problems
. The
turtle
in this
photograph
died
after
becoming
entangled
in
discarded
fishing
line
. The
line
constricted
movement
of the
front
flippers
and
strangulated
the
turtle
over
time
.
Despite
sea
turtle
outreach
efforts
on
South
Padre
Island
, the
jetty
area
,
which
is
frequented
by
endangered
sea
turtles
,
is
still
heavily
fished
. At this
time
, there are
no
recycling
bins
or
trash
bins
in the
jetty
area
. The
Green
Sea
Turtle
,
Chelonia
mydas
,
is
so-named
because
of the
green
fat
and
flesh
in its
body
. This
turtle
is
hunted
extensively
for
green
turtle
soup
,
featuring
its
gelatinous
calipee
,
which
is
a
delicacy
in
several
nations
. The
only
known
predators
of
adult
green
turtles
are
humans
and
large
sharks
.
Another
threat
to
Green
turtles
is
incidental
catch
in
fishing
trawls
. The
Green
Sea
Turtle
is
mostly
herbivorous
,
feeding
on
various
sea
grasses
and
marine
algae
.
Despite
its
dainty
food
choice
,
it
is
the
largest
hard-shelled
sea
turtle
.
Green
turtles
are
found
in
shallow
areas
in
bays
and
along
reefs
.
Greens
have been
known
to
trust
and
grow
accustomed
to
humans
in
areas
where
both
are
populous
.
Law
prohibits
domesticated
Green
Turtles
from
being
released
into the
ocean
.
Green
turtles
are
often
seen
swimming
and
foraging
in
coves
at
South
Padre
Island
,
Texas
.
