The
Northern
Cat-eyed
Snake
is
protected
in
Texas
as a
threatened
species
.
It
is
mildly
venomous
and in the
United
States
only
occurs
in
extreme
southern
Texas
. Its
range
beyond
the
United
States
extends
into
Mexico
to
Veracruz
and
Hidalgo
. An
isolated
colony
has also been
reported
in
Coahuila
. This
snake
has
grooved
fangs
at the
back
of its
mouth
.
It
may
be
potentially
harmful
to
humans
and should be
handled
carefully
or not at
all
. The
diet
of this
snake
consists
mostly
of
frogs
. The
cat-eyed
snake
is
most
often
seen
prowling
for
prey
after
heavy
rainfall
.
