Title
Eastern
Hognose
Snake
Location
Sabine
National
Forest
,
Sabine
County
,
Texas
Description
The
hognose
snake
is
a
relatively
harmless
colubrid
snake
that
can
be
distinguished
from
other
snakes
by its
upturned
snout
and by its
notorious
bluffing
behaviors
.
When
disturbed
,
hognose
snakes
tend
to
inflate
their
heads
,
hiss
loudly
, and
strike
with their
mouths
closed
.
When
this
fails
to
ward
off
a
predator
, the
snake
will
flip
over
with its
mouth
open
and
tongue
hanging
out
, and
release
a
foul-smelling
musk
.
Hognose
snakes
in the
wild
live
in
environments
with
sandy
soils
and
almost
exclusively
feed
on
toads
.
Hognoses
that have been
kept
in
captivity
and
fed
a
diet
consisting
mostly
of
rodents
have been
known
to
develop
liver
disease
and
die
.
