Scarlet
Snakes
are
non-venomous
colubrid
snakes
whose
pattern
mimics
that of the
venomous
coral
snake
. In
contrast
to
coral
snakes
of the
United
States
,
however
, the
pattern
of the
scarlet
snake
does
not
extend
to
include
the
venter
, and the
crossbands
are
arranged
so
that the
red
bands
do
not
touch
the
yellow
bands
.
Scarlet
Snakes
are
fossorial
and
spend
most
of their
lives
underground
in
soils
suitable
for
burrowing
. They are
usually
found
hiding
under
logs
or
debris
in the
southeastern
United
States
. The
Scarlet
Snake
is
said
to be the
snake
most
often
trapped
in
backyard
swimming
pools
.
