Title
Blotched
Water
Snake
-
Effects
of
Pollution
Location
Harris
County
,
Teas
Description
Although
commonly
mistaken
for the
cottonmouth
, the
Blotched
Water
Snake
is
actually
a
non-venomous
colubrid
snake
that
only
typically
bites
when
harassed
or
handled
.
It
is
found
in
nearly
every
type
of
aquatic
habitat
within
its
range
,
including
lakes
,
rivers
,
ponds
,
creeks
, and
cattle
tanks
,
where
it
eats
primarily
fish
and
amphibians
. This
snake
has
adapted
rather
well
to
live
in
suburban
to
urban
garden
ponds
with
aquatic
vegetation
and
prey
.
Prey
items
include
fish
,
frogs
,
tadpoles
, and
crayfish
. The
snake
in this
photo
managed
to
become
caught
in a
plastic
ring
.
Constriction
of this
nature
can
cause
serious
problems
for a
snake
. As the
snake
grows
, the
area
caught
in the
plastic
ring
may
become
pinched
,
preventing
blood
flow
to the
rest
of the
snake
.
Food
also
may
not be
able
to
pass
through
this
part
of the
snake
.
Depending
on
where
the
constriction
is
, the
snake
may
have to
continually
regurgitate
its
food
or the
food
may
get
held
up
in the
intestines
where
it
will
eventually
become
toxic
.
Fortunately
for this
snake
, the
person
who
discovered
it
cut
off
the
plastic
ring
.
Hopefully
,
it
was
able
to
fully
recover
. This
is
an
excellent
example
of how
even
the
smallest
piece
of
litter
can
cause
major
problems
.
