Title
Western
Cottonmouth
Location
Gus
Engeling
Wildlife
Management
Area
,
Anderson
County
,
Texas
Description
The
cottonmouth
gets
its
name
from the
white
lining
of the
mouth
cavity
that
is
usually
seen
during
the
snake's
gaping
mouth
defensive
display
.
Cottonmouths
are
usually
seen
basking
near
water
where
they
feed
on
fish
,
frogs
, and
small
rodents
, but are
occasionally
encountered
far
from
water
.
Cottonmouth
bites
can
be
extremely
dangerous
and
medical
care
should be
sought
immediately
after
possible
envenomation
.
Harmless
water
snakes
are
often
mistaken
for
cottonmouths
and are
therefore
killed
by
people
who
can't
tell
the
difference
.
Anyone
who
isn't
sure
whether
or not a
snake
is
venomous
should
just
be
sure
to
keep
away
from the
snake
altogether
.
