Salamanders
usually
prefer
moist
environments
, but the
Barred
Tiger
Salamander
has
adapted
to
live
in
arid
environments
such
as the
Lower
Rio
Grande
Valley
and
western
Texas
and
eastern
New
Mexico
. They are
occasionally
neotenic
in these
regions
because
the
ponds
nearby
may
be
dry
and
inadequate
for
metamorphosed
adults
.
Barred
Tiger
Salamanders
are
frequently
sold
in their
larval
form
as
fishbait
,
marketed
as
mudpuppies
and
waterdogs
. The
Barred
Tiger
Salamander
is
the
state
amphibian
of
Kansas
.
