Title
Pancake
Tortoise
Location
Houston
Zoo
,
Houston
,
Texas
Description
The
Pancake
Tortoise
gets
its
name
from its
flattened
shell
. This
shell
allows
for the
tortoise
to
wedge
itself
within
rock
crevices
for
protection
and
security
.
However
, the
shell
is
also
very
flexible
, and
provides
little
protection
against
predators
. The
Pancake
Tortoise
is
often
seen
in
zoos
but
is
native
to the
rocky
hillsides
of
East
Africa
,
where
its
collection
for the
pet
trade
poses
the
biggest
threat
to its
wild
populations
.
