The
Ornate
Box
Turtle
is
patterned
on
both
its
carapace
and
plastron
.
It
is
mostly
found
in
sandy
areas
in
arid
plains
and
prairies
,
where
it
burrows
to
escape
heat
. A
hinged
plastron
allows
these
turtles
to
completely
box
themselves
into their
shells
,
preventing
predators
from
access
to any
fleshy
parts
that they
might
try
to
nip
at.
