Spadefoots
are
often
called
Spadefoot
Toads
, but they are not
actually
true
toads
. They
get
their
name
from
spades
on their
hind
legs
that
facilitate
burrowing
through
sandy
soil
.
Spadefoots
prefer
grasslands
,
prairies
, and
savannahs
and have
adapted
very
well
to
withstand
arid
conditions
, but are
rarely
seen
without
rain
.
Spadefoots
secrete
a
substance
that has been
known
to
cause
allergic
reactions
in
some
humans
that
include
sneezing
and
discharge
from the
eyes
and
nose
.
Temporary
blindness
as a
result
of
handling
has also been
documented
.
Extended
handling
is
,
therefore
, not
recommended
.
