Title
Bull
Snake
Location
Albany
,
Shackelford
County
,
Texas
Description
The
Bull
Snake
is
often
mistaken
for the
Western
Diamondback
Rattlesnake
because
of its
defensive
behavior
of
hissing
and
rearing
off
of the
ground
in a
striking
posture
.
However
, the
Bull
Snake
is
not
venomous
and
may
be
distinguished
from a
rattlesnake
by the
absence
of a
rattle
and
lack
of a
black-and-white
banded
tail
.
(Bull
snakes
have a
tapered
yellowish
tail.)
It
would not
do
well
to
approach
a
snake
simply
to
determine
whether
or not
it
is
venomous
,
so
in
times
of
uncertainty
, the
best
policy
would be to
walk
in the
opposite
direction
of the
animal
. The
Bull
Snake
occupies
sandy
prairies
and
plains
and
open
rocky
habitats
.
It
is
an
accomplished
burrower
and
spends
much
of its
time
underground
,
where
it
feeds
mostly
on
small
burrowing
mammals
.
