The Fears family was traced back to Georgia in 1856 as slaves of Oliver Porter Fears. Beedie, Augustus, and Caroline Fears were brought to Texas in 1859 with Oliver and his wife Sarah. They lived and farmed on land outside of Garrison, Texas. The slaves were freed on June 19, 1865 when a proclamation was issued at the end of the Civil War. Beedie and her husband stayed in the area after given their freedom.

The Fears-Carpenter Collection: From Slavery to Freedom is a collection of transcripts based on the genealogical research done by Joel V. Fears Sr. There are six original portraits and a photocopy of the Doches Gazette with a story about Emeline Fears Carpenter.
