Description
Photograph of Hatchett's Ferry Inn , on the Angelina River at the boundary between Cherokee and Nacogdoches counties in Texas . The old road that passed through here serviced Atoy , Lowe's Chapel , Taylor's Chapel , and Smith County from Nacogdoches via Thompon's Bridge on West Mud Creek . David Rusk began ferry operation there, however he sold it to H . G . Hatchett in circa 1850 , who continued the ferry service and also operated the inn to provide lodging for travelers . The Hatchett's Ferry Inn , demolished in 1983 before preservation efforts could be implemented , was a wooden two-story building constructed in the tidelands south tradition of vernacular architecture . The structure is an example of an extended I-house with a side gable tin roof , a full width one-story porch on the front , horizontal board siding , and divided pane double-hung windows (six-over-six on the second-floor , nine-over-six on the bottom floor) . The building is clearly in poor repair .
