To join train cars together, the cast iron pin was inserted into the removable oblong link and a permanently attached coupler. Switchmen worked between railroad cars to complete the dangerous task of linking them.
The railroad lantern has a metal cage with a translucent glass globe inscribed "R. Parmelee, Nacogdoches, Texas." This type of lantern was used to relay signals and to inspect trains at night.
