On February 20, 1975, President Ralph W. Steen established the university archives to preserve the university's official records. The university's inactive records of archival value were to be transferred to the Special Collections Department for permanent preservation. This transfer would also provide faculty, staff, students, and the general public access to this material for their research needs. In 1994, the Special Collections Department was renamed the East Texas Research Center but continued its role as the official repository for university records. This digital collection contains select material from the university archives.
