This collection contains nearly 2,000 items, including maps, photographs and drawings, that document and share Texas' unique history. Newton Gresham Library collects and maintains subject specialties such as Texana, Civil War, criminal justice, avant-garde poetry and local history. Notable among the collections are the vivid drawings of Col. John W. Thomason Jr., namesake of Special Collections and notable Hunstville resident.
Materials found in this collection were digitized by Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) as part of the Texas Tides grant-funded project. For this project, materials from a number of institutions in East Texas were digitized and placed online through SFA. Texas Tides was meant to showcase some of the hidden treasures of East Texas.
Texas Tides has come to a close and the digitized materials are no longer hosted online through the project website. While these materials have been hosted through SFA and the East Texas Research Center, a transition is currently taking place. It is projected that by the beginning of 2014 - approximately three months - these materials in their entirety will be hosted by Sam Houston State University's Digital Collections (http://digital.library.shsu.edu/cdm/) and will no longer be accessed through the East Texas Research Center's Digital Archives & Collections.
