Sexual assault in the military has long gone unaddressed,
but Dr. Dana Cooper, history professor and gender studies
coordinator, wants to bring the subject to students’ attention.
“The rape of men and women goes on in the military, but it is
much more prevalent with women,” Cooper said.
As part of her initiative, Cooper arranged for the Gender
Studies and Military Science programs, along with Student
Activities, to screen the Oscar nominated documentary, The
Invisible War, which investigates the tendency for military of-ficials
to protect rapists while silencing rape victims.
“When the people you have to report to are the ones doing
it to you, there is something wrong with that,” Cooper said.
“Because at this point, sexual assault isn’t about sex, it’s about
power. It’s a situation of taking someone’s power from them.”
Coincidently, while planning the movie screening, Cooper’s
attention was transfixed by an article in Rolling Stone maga-zine
about the rape of Petty Officer Rebecca Blummer.
“With this particular woman, someone roofied her and in
that half-conscious state she was driving to the hospital, and
when she was two blocks away she was pulled over by the
police for driving with her lights off,” Cooper said. “They took
her out of the car because they thought she was drunk, they
asked her the standard questions, went through the field so-briety
test, and the moment they leaned her over the hood she
went berserk, understandably because of what she had gone

A group of 19 student representatives from the Campus Rec’s
Fitness and Wellness program traveled to Austin last Saturday
to attend the 2013 TexFit conference. Participants were exposed
to unique workout programs and techniques from schools all
around the state.
TexFit is a one-day fitness conference for group exercise
instructors and personal trainers from Texas universities and
colleges. The event began in 1998 and is held in a different lo-cation
around the state each year. The goal is to share and take
home ideas that can improve the fitness program experience.
The University of Texas at Austin hosted this year’s confer-ence.
More than 350 instructors from 20 schools across the
state showcased their methods.
Kate Bridges, the Rec’s fitness and wellness coordinator, said
the conference was a wonderful experience.
“There was lots of camaraderie,” Bridges said. “Everyone was
energized and excited about seeing new ideas.”
SFA participants chose six workout sessions from other
schools to try out and learn from. The programs ranged from
martial arts to yoga.

Spring Break is here, and so are the troubles
of alcohol.
The Safe Spring Break event was created to
promote safety. It will increase alcohol aware-ness,
and it will also inform students about
other fun activities to do instead of drinking.
The SFA Counseling Services and the
Department of Health Sciences will host the
Safe Spring Break event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Wednesday, March 6, in the Student Center
Plaza. The A-Team, a branch of Counseling
Services, will have information tables along
with games and giveaways to promote the
event. The event will end with a stand-up co-median
at 7 p.m. in the Twilight Ballroom.
“I want students to be informed and interac-tive,
so we found a comedian that can speak
to them,” said Jennifer Klingenberg, an SFA
counselor.
Wendi Fox is a professional stand-up come-dian,
and she was once a high-risk drinker. She
is doing a tour called Project Celebrate Safe that
promotes alcohol awareness.
This tour targets the party life on college
campuses. During the tour she travels to differ-ent
colleges and tell students about her experi-ences,
but in a hysterical way.
In a press release, Fox said, “Just telling them
to stop drinking doesn’t work.”
Fox uses an anti-lecture approach to gain her
audience’s attention. Instead of pressuring stu-dents
to stop drinking, she asks questions that
provoke thoughts and create change.
Klingenberg said Fox would be a great person
for students to relate to. She also said that there
was no better time to bring Fox here than right
before Spring Break.
Students tend to drink a lot during the break,
and I just want them to travel safe and be aware
while they are out celebrating,” Klingenberg
said.

The Society for Advancement of Management,
or SAM, chapter at SFA held a fundraiser last
week to earn money to finance the national
case competition.
The fundraiser was held at the Nacogdoches
area Walmart. Six members of SAM participated
in the fundraising, including Kaitlyn Georgette,
business senior and SAM president.
Georgette said they were hoping to earn be-tween
$200 and $300 at the fundraiser, but only
garnered $195.
“We did get a couple of funds from other peo-ple,
but we are putting that toward hotel rooms
and food,” Georgette said.
SFA’s SAM chapter is participating in the
national case competition held for SAM chap-ters
all across the U.S. The competition is from
March 21 to March 24 in Arlington, Va.
Georgette said the organization’s officers and
advisors pick three members to accompany
SAM’s vice president on the trip.
“Basically what they do is a team case com-petition,”
Georgette said. “They have a com-pany
they have to solve a problem for, such as
a hypothetical financial problem or things of
that sort.”
