This year “Let the Games Begin” as
Homecoming kicks off Monday, Oct. 15.
While Homecoming is always a time for
students, alumni, faculty and staff to participate in
SFA’s traditions, this year Homecoming has some
new spins.
“We will have a fun opening ceremony Monday
morning (Oct. 15) by Surfin’ Steve to announce
the candidates, and we are hoping to have some
faculty members speak and just kind of get things
going,” said Nicole Lejeune, Traditions Council
vice president.
Unlike previous years, Homecoming
court candidates are no longer running with
organizations; rather, they are running as
individuals.
Traditions Council resident Craig Wright explain
how this modification will work.
“In the past, it has been a sweep by the bigger,
more well-known organizations. So this year
we are hoping to eliminate the affiliation that
way more people will have a chance at winning,”

Recreation is turning five years
old, and all week there are
activities leading up to the big
day.
This celebration is “a
milestone for us, a student-proposed
addendum” that has
acted as a gateway in order
to fulfill Campus Rec’s “main
goal, which is to serve the
students and enhance their
activities,” Kati Van Dunk,
coordinator for promotions,
said. “We are ‘(celebrating)’
what we’ve accomplished in the
past five years,” she adds.
Daily promotions will help to
keep the excitement up, as if the
adrenaline from working out
does not already.
Van Dunk noted, “Really, it
is just promoting the idea that
students need to get involved
somewhere” on campus, and
the life-long benefits of working
out is a great way to do so.
Every day this week Campus
Rec is hosting a new activity
that does just that—promoting
and celebrating what they do.
“Membership Monday” was
the day citizens were able to
purchase membership for a
mere $5 that would last the rest
of the month.
“Time Out Tuesday” offered
the opportunity for a 10-minute
massage by a professional
masseuse for only $5. A typical
15-minute massage costs $12
for members.
To celebrate “Winning
Wednesday,” the Rec offered
a $5 coupon off your next
Intramural Sport Registration
fee.
“High/Low Thursday” will
offer a prize to any member that
either climbs to the top of the
40-foot rock wall or dives to the
very bottom of the diving well.
This offer lasts from 5 to 7 pm.
“Free Guest Friday” offers the
opportunity for any member to
bring a guest to the Rec Center
free for the day.
All week, members may
continue in the celebrations
through Birthday BINGO, which
consists of participating in
various recreational activities
and encourages one to try new
things.
Some of the spots on the BINGO
card read “Play Table Tennis,”
“Watch an Intramural Sport,” or
even “Dive off the Diving Board.”
The cards must be submitted
by Friday, which is when one
will be drawn as a winner at
the birthday celebration. This
ultimate celebration is taking
place on Friday at 4 p.m. in the
Rec Center Courtyard.
Birthday cake and drinks will
be provided, and a Campus Rec
prize package will be awarded.
Janice Casper, office manager,
was here when the Rec Center
first opened up, and said it has
been “a very exciting time for
me to see how the Campus Rec
has gone from a mere concept to
being opened and in business.”
Its growth thus far has been
nothing but phenomenal. The
employees do try to add what
interests the student body most
of all, and really just want their
customers to have a great time.
Manny Bryant, graduate
assistant for facilities, has
noticed quite a good turnout at
the celebration activities so far.
He knows that “Campus Rec is
a place to meet new friends,” as
well as have memorable times
with friends, old and new alike.

This past week students have been
voting for their class’ senator in the Student
Government Association elections. After
campaigning for the open positions, the
new SGA class representatives are freshmen
senators Tristian Harris, Marissa Parks,
Ja’la Perkins and Mathew Vela; Sophomores
BreAnna Hall, Marquice Hobbs and Caitlin
Rodriguez; Juniors Jeron Humphrey, Joseph
Walter, Collin Weyand and Lillian White;
Seniors Bianca Rodriguez and Kara Willis;
and Graduate student Tony Hensdill.
The voting took place on the new AXES
system on Monday, September 17 through
Tuesday, September 18. Compared to years
past, this election has had a larger turn out
in the voting. “AXES has been a big help,”
said Dennis Hagans, the Student Body
President, “promoting our elections and
also I would say the awareness of SGA and
different organizations.”
“Our spring elections are a lot bigger,” said
Hagans, “because that’s when the executive
positions open up and that’s whenever you
have your college elections.” In the spring,
students from the different colleges on
campus run to represent their respective
college in the student government. The
SGA is modeled to run like the actual
government, with the senate, an executive
branch, and a judicial branch, which is why
these open positions are important for the
students to have a voice.
“We’ve added back to our meeting
agenda this year open forum, which, that’s
the section of our meeting where students
who may not be senators can speak,” said
Hagans, “every student is a member of SGA
because we do represent the student body,
so every student has speaking rights at our
meeting.” All of SGA’s meetings are open, so
students can attend the meeting and now
voice their opinions and concerns. After
