Students joined together to promote unity between
campus and the community on Friday by participating
in The BIG Event.
Existing as an annual day of service, The BIG Event
provides SFA students with a way to give thanks to the
community by working in teams to complete numerous
service projects throughout Nacogdoches County.
The event aims to reciprocate the support the
University has received from the community through-out
the years.
By completing jobs such as window washing, yard
work, interior/exterior painting and much more, stu-dents
were given the “hands-on” opportunity to express
their gratitude and appreciation.
Registration for the event began at 1 p.m. at the
Campus Recreation Center Courtyard where teams
gathered and prepared for the upcoming tasks.
At 2 p.m., teams were dispersed to go to various work
sites including The Salvation Army, the Nacogdoches
County Chamber of Commerce, Vineyard Church and
areas along East Stallings Loop for highway clean-up.
Students returned to the Campus Recreation Center
at 5 p.m. where dinner was provided to all who partici-pated.
Students receive service hours for their volunteer ef-forts,
and many students find the experience to be very
rewarding and beneficial.
“We do get a sense of accomplishment, and that
we’re helping people out,” Lola Brown said, a committee
member of The BIG Event. “Giving back is always good. I
couldn’t be in a better organization to let me do this.”
The BIG Event is an annual service project.
Nacogdoches residents are encouraged to allow SFA
students to express their gratitude and appreciation by
requesting the performance of a service project.

The second annual 5k Run for the Ring
event took place Saturday morning. Both
students and members of the SFA com-munity
were invited to register for the
race beginning at 7 a.m. in the Commuter
Lot across from the William R. Johnson
Coliseum.
Hosted by the SFA Traditions Council,
this event provides all who complete the
race with the chance to win an SFA ring
and additional raffle prizes donated from
local businesses through a random ticket
drawing.
With the race beginning at 8 a.m., par-ticipants
followed a winding course that
ran throughout the SFA campus and fin-ished
back at the initial starting place, the
commuter lot.
This year a total of 86 people partici-pated
in the race, a large increase from
last year’s total of about 40 students and
community members in attendance.
SFA student Esteban Nambo is this
year’s winner of the main raffle and will
receive the prize of an SFA ring.
“We felt like everyone enjoyed it,” Grant
Korbel, member of the SFA Traditions
Council, said. “We feel it’s a tradition
that’s going to stick around and that we’ll
be able to do this for years to come.”
The SFA ring is a symbol of commit-ment
and dedication to the University.
Students who have attained 60 credit
hours can order their rings through the
Alumni Association every fall and spring
semester.
Once rings have been ordered, students
can participate in the Big Dip ceremony,
also held at the end of every fall and
spring semester.
Run for the Ring will take place again
next spring as the Traditions Council is
hoping for an even greater turnout in par-ticipation
among students and members
of the community.

SFA’s Ad Team won the 2011 Special
Judges’ Award for Innovation at the National
AAF Student Advertising Competition in
Oklahoma City last week.
SFA art, communication and marketing
students topped 18 schools from five states
to win the judges’ award.
The competition was the culmination of a
yearlong class in which students developed
a national advertising and marketing plan
for JC Penney. Five of the 24 SFA students
who worked on the project presented the
campaign during the American Advertising
Federation conference.
The award was based on SFA’s fashion
lab and development of the jcp.com app, as
well as a large interactive iPhone created for
the presentation. The SFA team was third
runner-up in the campaign competition.
Naeem Munaf, Stephanie Slabaugh,
Cameron Dennis, Kyle Larson and Will Yull
represented SFA before the judges. Tiffany
Occhiogrosso was the alternate. At the end
of the presentation, all of the attending SFA
students stood before the judges to answer
questions about the strategy, creativity and
execution of the ad campaign. Munaf cre-ated
the interactive iPhone for the competi-tion.
“We appreciate all the help that the local
JC Penney has given us,” Munaf said. He
gave special thanks to Marilyn Philips,
store manager; Anne King, supervisor, and
Tammy Mansfield, sales associate.
Sponsors of the team include Student
Organizations/Student Activities, Tipton
Ford, Sigma Nu Fraternity, American
Marketing Association, TAG (Tomorrow’s
Alumni Generation), The Peck Family,
Barbara Bieber-Hamby, Association for
Women & Men in Communication, The
Larson Family, Scott Almand, David
Nguyen, Shelley’s Bakery, The Wildflower &
Caddo Trail Arts and Downtown Arts.
SFA’s Ad Team will present the campaign
at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Cole Art Center, 329
E. Main St
The public is invited.
