Good food, great friends and fun
nights. What more could a col-lege
student want?
As many new Lumberjacks will soon
figure out, October is one of the busiest
months during the fall semester. With
all the campus chaos going on, students
can find their inner fiesta side and take
some time to celebrate National Hispanic
Heritage Month, hosted by the Office of
Multicultural Affairs and the Organization
of Latin Americans of SFA.
National Hispanic Heritage Month runs
from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and was origi-nally
recognized under the presidencies
of Lyndon B. Johnson and Ronald Reagan.
The OMA and OLA of SFA are celebrat-ing
this time through the end of October
as a way to recognize the accomplish-ments
of the Hispanic/Latino culture, its
history and the growing Hispanic com-munity
on campus and in Nacogdoches.
Psychology junior Jaqueline Cerrato be-came
a member of OLA after transferring
into SFA and said it helped her become
more comfortable.
“I transferred spring of 2012, and by not
knowing anybody I wanted to meet other
Hispanics on campus who I could relate to
and make me feel more at home,” Cerrato
said.
Others involved with OLA and this
year’s Hispanic Heritage Month events
include Steffi Huerta, special education
senior and OLA’s president, and Ismael
Herrera, public administration junior and
OLA’s vice president.
“Joining OLA has definitely helped me
get more involved in Hispanic Heritage Month,” Herrera
said. “I have always attended events that celebrate it, but
until I joined OLA I had never actually helped organize
one.”
OLA kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with a small
presentation on Sept. 20 in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker
Pattillo Student Center. It was a chance to let students ex-press
their appreciation of being Latino/a.
Other celebrations include the third annual “Taste of
Latin America,” an event that will take place beginning at 5
p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the East College Café on campus.
Students who want to taste a variety of Latin foods can visit
the event, which is free for on-campus residents who can
“swipe in” with their ID card. Others can pay $7 to experi-ence
the “Taste of Latin America.”
The event was recognized by SFA as Event of the Year for
the 2011-2012 school year. It will be hosted by Sigma Lamda
Beta International Fraternity Inc. Radio/television
junior and social chair for Sigma Lambda Beta, Estaban
Nambo, hopes to continue to make the event bigger and
better than before.
“We do this to make the campus more aware of what our
culture has to offer,” Nambo said. “We’ll also have perfor-mances
and teach people how to dance. It’s an overall fun
event.”
Huerta said she is looking forward to attending the event
because she loves Latin food and is “excited to dance the
night away.”
The OMA will host the event “Avanzando y No Olvidando:
Going Forward without Forgetting” at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 in the
BPSC Theatre.
Students can go and engage themselves in a conversation
on servant leadership, development, growth and empower-ment
with retired Lt. Col. Consuelo Castillo-Kickbusch.
She broke many barriers, set records in the military
and became the highest-ranking Hispanic woman in the
Combat Support Field of the U.S. Army.
Although attending the festivities are exciting parts of
the month, having a Latin background means much more
to the students involved.
Cerrato chose the word “unity” to describe her Latino
heritage.

Dr. Adam Peck, dean of student affairs
at SFA, has struck an interesting deal with
Sam Houston’s dean, John Yarabeck.
Depending on the outcome of the up-coming
Battle of the Piney Woods, the los-ing
school’s dean has to wear a tie the color
of their rival’s team and submit a photo for
the winning team to publish in its school
newspaper.
This is the first year a bet like this has
been made between SFA and Sam Houston.
“We were discussing another issue and
he raised the idea of a bet,” Peck said. «It
sounded like fun, so we both decided to
do it.
“I believe I added the condition that
not only would we have to wear the other
team’s tie, we would also have to send a
photo that we could share with our school
newspapers,” he said.
This is perhaps the start of a new tra-dition,
or at least Peck hopes it will be.
“I know that I’ll want to do it, since SFA will
win,» Peck said. «I don’t know if he’ll want
to do it again after he has to wear an SFA
tie.”
The Battle of the Piney Woods will
take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Reliant
Stadium in Houston. This will be the
third year the game is played in Houston.
“I want the team to know it’s that they have
the full support of this community. More
students are signed up for the fan busses to
all of our games, and the axe handles and
Jacks’ Charge have brought a new excite-ment
to campus. We’ve got their backs,”
Peck said.
Will Dr. Peck sport orange Oct. 8?
Parents Day brought nearly
1,000 families together for a pud-dle-
splashing-good time. The event
gives parents a chance to visit with
their students in their own environ-ment,
doing things such as eating in
the cafeteria and going to the foot-ball
game with them.
Despite the rain, the turnout was
great, and some brave parents ac-companied
their kids to the football
game. A few noteworthy events in-clude
the Academic Fair, the show-ing
of “The Lion King,” and SFA
President Baker Pattillo's spirited
speech at the Welcome Ceremony.
The photo key chains SAA made
were a huge hit too.
James Beeks said, "compared to
last year Parents Day was 10 times
better. We had a better theme, and
everyone loved the T-shirts."
