The SFA Dance teams, including the Pom
Squad and Jack Attack, will hold their sixth
annual dance contest Saturday in Shedlton
Gym.
T. J. Maple, dance teams head coach,
said the competition will begin at 10 a.m.
and will last until approximately 4 p.m.
Anyone wishing for more information can
contact Maples at maplejv@sfasu.edu, by
telephone at 936-468-1604 or stop by the
SFA Spirit office in the Baket Pattillo Student
Center.
The SFA Spirit office is home to 18
national championships in cheerleading
and dance and is known as a leader in
cheer and dance innovation. The SFA
Spirit program is made up of the Large
Co-Ed and Small Co-Ed Cheerleading
teams in addition to the SFA Pom Squad
and Jack Attack.

to host UTSA
Saturday night
Missing the
point on
health issues Jamal Smith of Killeen and
Jessica Patterson of Texas
City were chosen as the 2011
recipients of the Mr. and Miss
SFA Awards presented by the
SFA Alumni Association.
The Mr. and Miss SFA ti-tles
are awarded each year
to exemplary student rep-resentatives
of SFA. The Mr.
SFA Award was established
in honor of the late Stan
McKewen, a 1934 SFA grad-uate.
The Miss SFA Award
was established in honor of
Arnodean Covin, who was
named Miss SFA in 1940,
1941 and 1942.
Smith is a senior at the
university and is majoring in
business. A 2007 graduate of
North Mesquite High School,
he is the son of Kassandra
Smith of Killeen.
Smith has been hon-ored
with the bronze, sil-ver
and gold Presidential
Volunteer Service Awards
for his service to SFA and
the community. He received
the National Orientation
Directors Association Student
Leadership Award in 2010 for
his service as an orientation
leader and supervisor at SFA.
Smith was a student instruc-tor
for SFA 101 and is a mem-ber
of the Order of Omega by
demonstrating outstanding
leadership and academics as
a member of the greek com-munity.
Smith’s community volun-teer
work includes service in
the Theta Chi fraternity. He
organized and implemented
the first Theta Chi Give Back
Week, served as the commu-nity
service chairman and
worked as a new member
educator for the fraternity. As
a member of the SFA Student
Activities Association, Smith
volunteers his time to coor-dinate
and assist with many
campus events. He is a vol-unteer
with Driving Jacks,
and he served as a Jack Camp
counselor for two years.
Patterson is a senior ma-joring
in communication
studies. A 2007 graduate of
Texas City High School, she is
the daughter of Michael and
Wendy Patterson of Texas
City.
Patterson has held many
leadership positions at SFA.
Most recently, she served
as president of the Zeta Tau
Alpha fraternity. In 2008, she
was voted the Zeta Tau Alpha
Miss SFA for her involvement
on campus. Patterson coordi-nated
the Houston Susan G.
Komen Race for the Cure and
co-produced an awareness
video with the Nacogdoches
Medical Center to debut its
“Simply Pink” fashion show.
She was awarded a Texas
City Rotary Club Scholarship
for leadership and academ-ic
excellence and inducted
into the Order of Omega.
Patterson was a student
instructor for SFA 101 and
served as an orientation su-pervisor
and leader. She was
employed by the Academic
Assistance Resource Center
as a supplementary instruc-tion
leader.
Her volunteer work in-cludes
service with Driving
Jacks, the Nacogdoches
Boys and Girls Club, Adopt a
Highway clean up, and Relay
for Life.
Award recipients are se-lected
based on their scholar-ship,
participation and lead-ership
in academic and co-curricular
activities, citizen-ship
and service, and loyalty
to the university. Selections
were made by a committee
of faculty and staff members,
students and alumni.
Alumni Association names 2011 Mr. and Miss SFA
SFA PUBLIC AFFAIRS
SFA has reported a spring
student enrollment of 11,896,
a 1.1-percent decrease from
last year. The number of SFA
students attending classes
decreased by 133 students
from spring 2010 to spring
2011.
The spring 2010 enroll-ment
of 12,029 was the
highest spring enrollment
in the university’s history
and marked a 7.2-percent
increase from the previous
year. Although this spring’s
enrollment is slightly down
from last year, it represents
the second-highest spring
enrollment in the universi-ty’s
history.
Undergraduate enroll-ment
is unchanged from
spring 2010 with 10,288 stu-dents,
while graduate enroll-ment
decreased from 1,741
to 1,608.
Several of SFA’s colleges
experienced year-to-year in-creases
in spring enrollment,
including the College of Fine
Arts, up 4.8 percent from 770 to
807; the Arthur Temple College
of Forestry and Agriculture, up
0.6 percent from 627 to 631;
and the College of Sciences
and Mathematics, up 1.9 per-cent
from 1,873 to 1,909.
Enrollment in the Nelson
Rusche College of Business
decreased 6.8 percent from
1,846 to 1,721. James I. Perkins
College of Education enroll-ment
decreased 0.9 percent
from 3,839 to 3,805, while
enrollment in the College of
Liberal and Applied Arts de-creased
1.7 percent from 3,074
to 3,023.

BET star Alesha Renee spoke before an audience in the Twilight Ballroom
of the student center Tuesday night discussing issues facing women in
today’s world. Renee covered a variety of topics, such as domestic violence,
sexual abuse and single parenting. A question-and-answer portion
concluded the event, which was free to all SFA students, faculty and staff
and the community.

Families can get hands-on gardening
experience at Gardening 101 this Saturday
at SFA.
SFA Gardens to present Gardening 101 class
SFA Gardens will host a beginning garden-ing
class for the whole family from 9 a.m. until
noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, in Room 110 of the
SFA Agriculture Building on Wilson Drive.
Dawn Stover, SFA master horticulturist, will
present a Gardening 101 seminar for parents
to give them the information and confidence
needed to start a small backyard garden. Topics
covered will include site location, soil amend-ments,
raised bed options, what and when to
plant, harvesting, and fun gardening ideas for
the kids.
While the adults are learning gardening ba-sics,
the children will do hands-on gardening
activities with the SFA Nacogdoches Naturally
staff. During the second part of the morning,
families will come together for a veggie taste
sampler and an opportunity to plant a take-home
project. In addition, a limited number of
cool season plants will be available for purchase
by participants. Weather permitting, the event
will conclude with a short tour of the vegetable
and herb sections of the SFA Arboretum gar-den.
The cost for the event, which includes all
supplies, will be $10 per family.
