Biographical Note | Marion Upshaw grew up in Douglas, Texas. He attended Black schools in Douglas and graduated salutatorian. He then went off to Texas College and earned a degree in biology in 1955. His degree, meant for teaching, led him to work in Douglas, Texas as a teacher in 1959. In 1965, he began teaching in Nacogdoches. He taught biology and math at E. J. Campbell High School. During the integration process, he was one of the first Black teachers to go over to the White school. He retired in 1992, after thirty-three years of teaching, at the age of fifty-nine. |

Scope and Content Note | Interview and transcription completed in conjunction with theNacogdoches African American Heritage Project and Dr. Paul J. P.SandulÕs oral history course at Stephen F. Austin State University,Nacogdoches, Texas (Summer 2010). Upshaw requested meeting at the Nacogdoches Public Library. Unfortunately, that June 23rd was also some kind of childrenÕs day so the quality of the sound is not the greatest. |
