Biographical Note	In 1837 the University of San Augustine was chartered by the Republic of Texas. Nominally a state institution, it soon fell under the control of the Presbyterians. This caused some bad feelings among the people of San Augustine and, in 1844, the Methodists, under the leadership of Francis Wilson, established a rival institution, the Wesleyan Male and Female College. Since the town was too small to support two schools, neither thrived, and in 1848, the University of Eastern Texas was established as an attempt to unite both institutions into a state school. This school soon failed due to poor management. In 1850 the Masonic Institute of San Augustine, careful to remain non-sectarian, established a school, divided into Male and Female Departments and utilizing both buildings. Transcript	The Republic of Texas} San Augustine County} This agreement made and entered into on this, the 23rd day of January, A.D. 1845, between "The Trustees of the Wesleyan College" of the County and Republic aforesaid of the first part, and Felix G. Lovell of the same place of the other part. Witnesseth: That the said Trustees have this day contracted to and with said Lovell to finish and complete, in a workman-like manner, the three story building now occupied by President L. Janes for school-teaching in said County, as follows: said building to be completely sealed in a substantial and workman-like manner, the floors to be finished in the same manner, four columns in the first, and four in the second story, fully large and neat for said building, four substantial double panel doors, one single panel door, and said doors to be well cased, and the windows to be neatly and well cased, and other work necessary to be done on the windows, one partition on the second floor and door and casing to the same, and chair boarding around the room of the first story. Said Trustees to furnish the materials for said Building and the whole of said work to be finished and completed by the first day of July next, provided the materials should be furnished in due time, and if any delay is occasioned in consequence of the materials not being furnished in due time, then the work is to be completed as soon after the first day of July next as the delay will permit. The time to be delayed beyond the first of July to be only in proportion to the delay caused in getting materials, if any delay is caused. In consideration of which said work so to be done and performed by said Lovell, said Trustees are to pay to said Lovell the sum of four hundred, thirty dollars, two hundred, thirty- nine ($239) dollars of which said sum of money has already been paid to said Lovell, the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, and the other one hundred, ninety-one dollars to be paid in twelve months from the date hereof unless sooner paid by consent of the parties. In testimony whereof the parties to this agreement hath herewith set their hands and seals the day and year above-written. Witness: F. G. Lovell {seal} Y. B. Sexton A. M. Davis {seal} T.
