| Biographical Note | J. Roy Gray, son of Joseph R. and Julia McPaul Gray, was born in Bastrop, Texas, on November 5, 1888. On October 5, 1914, he married Clara Hoya, daughter of Charles and Francis Meisenheimer Hoya. J. Roy Gray served as a prominent businessman and civic leader in the Nacogdoches community. For many years, he was president of the Hoya Abstract Company. He also served as President of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association, as a director of the Stone Fort National Bank, and as a director of the community Hotel Corporation. From the opening of City Memorial Hospital in 1928 until his death, he served on the executive Committee and promoted many Hospital programs. J. Roy Gray died on March 30, 1966, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. ("J. Roy Gray Dies Today", The Daily Sentinel, Nacogdoches, Texas, March 30, 1966, sec. 1A). |
| Scope and Content Note | This collection consists of original deeds and other documents relating to the von der Hoya family in Nacogdoches. One item of interest is a conveyance of property in Nacogdoches from Thomas J. Rusk to Bennett Blake which includes the Red House. The Red House was the Old Spanish Barracks until 1832 and then in 1845 it became Nacogdoches University. |

| Transcript | Sr. Felipe de Austin 15 Novem 1832 Dear Sir, The extraordinary rainy season has in conjunction with the circumstance of that desk of Mr. Henry's being wanting, delayed very much the departure of your goods. - I did understand that Mr H said he would not deliver the goods until his desk was delivered, that he had your receipt for it and held you accountable. al ultimo they are now on their road. Mr. Taylor delivered me $183. 62/100. - an additional charge of five dollars was made for storage which made the a/c $230. 62/100. - The memorandum furnished me from Brazoria is as follows, to wit - Duties............$ 176. - Freight......... 46 - Drayage ........... 3 Storage ......... 13.62 $ 238.62 4 3/4 yards Cloth sold a 5$ pr yard. Net sales, $21.38. I yards delivered to Capt Austin the price for the last was not fixed as Capt Austin thot (sic) the price too high at 5$. - Being myself without any authority from you to dispose of any part of the goods, nor any instructions directly or indirectly to that point, all I could do was to make it known to you for your decision. I was not aware until I rec'd the statement that any have been sold, and am uninformed, whether done by any orders or instructions from you to Mr Waller or not. The Statement of the affair stands thus. amt charges....... .... $ 238.62 freight paid from Brazoria to Mr. Bells... ......... 12.50 $ 251.12 Cr. By amt rec'd from Mr Taylor 183.62 of which One hundred fifty dollars was in Bank papers & which Exchanged as follows 100 $ at 3 % in Mexican dollars 3. - 50 at 5% hammered money 2.50 $189.12 189.12 62.00 from which deduct the net sales of 4 3/4yds cloth as before mentioned 21.38 and also the amt of yards delivered to Capt Austin, which as before observed must be priced by you. Capt Austin thinks it should be $3 75/100 to 4$ per yard, I informed him I had no authority to fix a prices. - the amt of this and the other to be deducted from the balance $62$, the difference you will remit me with the following - I have furnished Mr. Midkiff with money corn and etc as follows. Black smiths [missing] shoeing horses.... $ 3.25 Corn, pumkins (sic) and meat at Mr Bells 13.25 du at this place........ 4.50 Sugar and coffee............ 3.00 Cash to defray expences (sic)........... 15. - $39.00 I have endeavored to make the statement explanatory and hope you will be satisfied, removed as I am from the place of deposit and heaving to operate thr. others, it is difficult at all times to do as one could wish. We have no news from the interior, the mail has just arrived but bro't nothing beyond Bexar. Little or no prospect of matters becoming settled in the interior. And it seems as if Texas would ere long be called upon to look after itself until the gov't of the nation can settle down permanently If you have any accquaintances (sic) elected officers in the new Militia Regulation I would be pleased that you would throw your influence in favor of John Austin for Brigadier general.
