Biographical Note	Albert Thomas was born in Nacogdoches, TX on April 12, 1898, to Lonnie (Langston) and James Thomas. He attended local public schools and served as a second lieutenant in the United States Army during World War I. Albert graduated from Rice University in 1920. In 1922, while attending the University of Texas, Albert Thomas married his long time sweetheart Lera Millard of Nacogdoches. He graduated from the University of Texas in 1926 with a degree in law. He was admitted to the bar in 1927 and served as Nacogdoches County Attorney from 1927-1930. In 1930, the Thomas’ moved to Houston to allow Albert to serve as assistant United States district attorney, which he did until 1936. The family moved to Washington, D.C. when Albert was elected to Congress. He served in Congress from Jan. 1937 until his death on February 15, 1966. He died in Washington, D.C. and was buried in the Veterans’ Administration Cemetery, Houston, TX.
Scope and Content Note	The majority of this collection contains letters from Albert to Lera, starting in 1915 up to their marriage in 1922. There are also many letters from Lera and her daughters during a European trip they took together in 1954. You will find only a few photos of Albert Thomas and friends at Rice University. The rest of the collection consists of miscellaneous letters, telegrams and cards.

Transcript	Pittsburg, Kansas December 9, 1918. Dearest Lera:- Your special came this morning and I was just so happy to get it. Well - Lera, I told you in my last letter what a jam I was in before I go any further - what I tell you is to be immediately forgotten. I feel as though I can tell you all of my trouble more readily than any one else, as you are so dear to me. Here it goes: all five of us poor officers are under arrest. I am confined to my quarters, which are 1/2 mile from the Post. The remaining officers are confined to the Post. I in particular am in bad. The President of the institution threatens to notify the Department Commander, who will in turn cause a General Courts Martial to be convened here. However, he said if I would be placed under arrest and be removed from the Post and serve my conncetion the S. A. J. C. at this post things would be ok. Of course that was all agreed to, but Jesus, how in the world can I severe my official connection I am assigned here as adjutant by the adjutant general of the Army and can not be relieved until he notifies me to that effect. The president need not know that. The commanding officers of the post told the president that if were to leave, the men could not be discharged. (We are discharging the men now) But the damned old fool said "he should worry." Here it is the other officers are last, I am the only one who knows how to discharge the organization. However we are working just the same. The old officer has been moved to my quarters I have six orderlies working here. Typewriters are catching hell. I have a car, which runs back and forth from my quarters to the barracks. The neighbors are wondering what in the world is happen. It is real funny to see soldiers running out here with an arm full of papers, and especially the mass of typewriters. Honey I was never more worried in my life but now is the time to sit tight. Here is hoping we come thru all ok, but I fear it is doubtful. Lera, I am expecting to see you before Christmas. Now for God sake, don't disappoint me. Mrs Johnson too is expecting you. Will keep in touch at all times. Pray for this poor man of yours. All my love for you honey Albert over Have repeatedly tried to get you today over long distance - but all in vain. This is a great life if you don't weaken. I am powerfully lonesome.
